Reinier Beeuwkes

Reinier Bertus Beeuwkes (born February 17, 1884 in The Hague , South Holland , † April 1, 1963 ibid) was a Dutch football player .

Beeuwkes was first goalkeeper for Quick Den Haag at the beginning of the 20th century and moved to DFC Dordrecht in 1903 .

On April 30, 1905, he was part of the Dutch national soccer team that played the first international soccer match in the country's history. In Antwerp , the team won 4-1 against hosts Belgium .

Beeuwkes remained the goalkeeper of the national team until 1910 and made a significant contribution to the fact that the Netherlands developed into one of the strongest teams in Europe during the early days of the sport. He played 19 of the team's first 22 games, with the Netherlands winning 13.

The high point of his career was the 1908 Summer Olympics in London , when football was an official part of the Olympic program for the first time. After Hungary and Bohemia withdrew their teams, the Netherlands reached the semi-finals without a fight. There the team was defeated by the later Olympic champion England . With a 2-0 win against Sweden , the Dutch then secured the bronze medal.

Beeuwkes ended his active career in 1910 and emigrated to the Dutch East Indies . In 1926 he moved to the south of France before he returned to The Hague in 1933 . Successor in the goal of the Dutch national team was Just Göbel from Vitesse Arnhem .
