Four sailing competitions were held at the IV Summer Olympics in 1908 . The venues for the three smaller boat classes were the Solent off Ryde on the Isle of Wight and the largest boat class on the Firth of Clyde off the west coast of Scotland . A regatta in the 15-meter boat class was also planned, but this had to be canceled due to a lack of registrations.

The rules of the Yacht Racing Association were used , but they were explicitly based on those of the International Sailing Federation founded the year before . Each participating country was allowed to send two boats, regardless of where the boat was built.
