A water polo competition was held at the IV Olympic Games in London in 1908 . All games took place in the swimming pool of the White City Stadium . Four teams with seven players each took part.

The games of the preliminary round had already been drawn before the final registration of the individual teams. Shortly before the start of the tournament, the teams from Hungary and Austria withdrew their registration because the Austrian government had concerns about allowing teams from both halves of the empire to compete. In this way the Swedes and the British got one round without a fight. In the only preliminary round match, Belgium clearly beat the Netherlands 8-1.

As a result of the two absences, only three teams were represented in the semi-finals. Hosts Great Britain went straight to the final without having played a game beforehand. In the game for second place in the final, Belgium beat Sweden 8: 4. The rested British were able to use their advantage in the final and defeated the Belgians 9: 2.
