George Wilkinson (born March 3, 1879 in Gorton , England , † August 7, 1946 in Hyde , England) was a British water polo player.
Wilkinson played as an amateur in Manchester until 1899, but was accepted the following year by the Manchester Osborne Swim Club , which also took him to the 1900 Olympic Games, but did not use him there. After winning the amateur championship in 1901, he moved the following year to Hyde Seal SC , where he played for the next 22 years and helped the team to new championships and winning the 1904 World Cup in Paris. In addition to the gold medal in 1900, in which he was not used, he also won the Olympic water polo tournaments in 1908 and 1912, in which he led the team as captain. At the Olympic Games in 1920 and 1924 he still took part as a reservist.
Wilkinson has been a keen swimmer since childhood and, at the age of 17, finished third in the 500-yard swimming championship in 1896. Wilkinson is considered the first great star of water polo because of his numerous goals and his throwing techniques. After his career, he ran the Wheatsheaf Hotel in Hyde for many years .
