qualification

Qualification criteria

260 athletes will take part in the competitions, 104 women (eight teams with 13 players each) and 156 men (twelve teams with 13 players each). In the men's category, the medal winners of the world championships from July 16 to 31, 2011 in Shanghai as well as the winners of the FINA World League 2011 qualified. The winners of the five continental championships or qualifying tournaments each qualified for women and men. Great Britain was automatically qualified to host and is considered a European qualifier. In April 2012 there was also an international qualification tournament for women and men, in which the three best teams qualified for the Olympic tournament. If a country had already qualified for the Olympic tournament and subsequently achieved another placement that allowed participation, the next team that had not yet qualified moved up.

Overview of all qualification competitions:

Men:

Women:

  • Pan American Games in Guadalajara , October 23-28, 2011MexicoMexico
  • Asian qualifying tournament in Chiba , January 23-29, 2012JapanJapan
  • International qualification tournament in Trieste , April 15-22, 2012ItalyItaly

In the men's field, Serbia was the first qualified team to win the World League. Italy, Croatia and Hungary secured their participation in the world championships. The US team qualified for the Pan American Games for women and men, Kazakhstan for the men for the Asian qualifying tournament and China for the women. The African associations have decided not to host a qualifying tournament. The quota space that became free was then allocated at the final qualifying tournaments, so that four teams could qualify here.
