Viktor Axelsen (born January 4, 1994 in Odense ) is a Danish badminton player .

Career

As a youth player, Axelsen won four youth titles in his home country Denmark until 2008. On the international stage he was U-17 European Champion in 2009 , World Youth Champion in 2010 and European Youth Champion in 2011 . He celebrated his first international tournament success among adults at the Cyprus International 2010 . In the same year he was nominated for the first time for the Danish national team at the Thomas Cup . In the finals of this world championship for men's teams, he was not used. Tournament victories at the Spanish Open 2011 , the Dutch International 2013 and the Denmark International 2013 followed .

In 2013 , 2014 and 2015 he won the Copenhagen Masters . He won bronze medals in his two European championships in 2012 in Karlskrona and 2014 in Kazan , as well as in the 2014 World Cup in Copenhagen . He beat Henri Hurskainen , Erik Meijs , Tiến Minh Nguyễn and Chou Tien-Chen in two sets. In the semifinals he was clearly defeated by Lee Chong Wei in two sets. In the same year he won the Swiss Open . In 2016, the European championship followed in La Roche-sur-Yon .

His greatest success so far in men's singles is winning the 2017 World Cup in Glasgow against the five-time world champion Lin Dan . This was the first world title for a European in 20 years . For this title he was voted Denmark's Sportsman of the Year in the same year .
