Lee Chong Wei ( Chinese  李宗偉  /  李宗伟 , Pinyin Lǐ Zōngwěi ; born October 21, 1982 in Bagan Serai , Perak , Malaysia ) is a former Malaysian badminton player . He is considered one of the best and most successful badminton players in the world.

Career

In the men's singles, Lee achieved silver at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 and in London in 2012 , won the All England in 2010 , 2011 , 2014 and 2017 and was runner-up in 2011 , 2013 and 2015 . In all, he won four times the BWF Super Series Finals , ten Super Series Premier tournaments , 28 Super Series tournaments , twice the Asia Cup , twice the Commonwealth Games , six World Grand Prix tournaments , nine Grand Prix Gold tournaments , a Grand Prix tournament and an international tournament.

Lee was number 1 in the men's singles world ranking since June 9, 2016 , but was replaced by Viktor Axelsen in December and led from August 21, 2008 to June 14, 2012 for 199 weeks and from September 27, 2012 to December 24, 2014 for 117 weeks this on. On June 29, 2006 it was first ranked number 1 in the world. He is the third Malaysian after Rashid Sidek and Roslin Hashim since the introduction of the official rankings in the 1980s and the first Malaysian ever to hold this position for more than a year.

On August 17, 2008, Lee was defeated in the final of the men's singles at the Olympic Games in Beijing to the Chinese Lin Dan in two sets. This made him the sixth Malaysian to win a medal at the Olympics. For winning the silver medal, the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Najib Razak , distinguished him as a “national hero” and awarded him the title of Datuk . At the Olympic Games in London in 2012 he was also defeated by Lin Dan in the final and had to be content with silver again. The second silver medal made him Malaysia's most successful Olympian in history. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , Lee reached the final again, where he lost to Chen Long in straight sets.

Lee Chong Wei played his last game in the semifinals of the Indonesia Open on July 7, 2018. Two months later, he withdrew from international competition due to an early-stage diagnosis of nasal cancer and hoped for a comeback in 2019, but that never happened. During a press conference on June 13, 2019, after 19 years of professional sport with consideration for family and health, he announced his resignation. With a total of 69 titles and 34 finals at major events as well as 349 weeks as first in the world rankings, Lee Chong Wei is one of the most successful badminton players of all time, even if he was denied an Olympic victory or world championship title.

doping

In November 2014, it became known that Lee was suspected of doping . The anti-inflammatory glucocorticoid dexamethasone was detected in the B sample, which threatened to be banned for up to two years. He was temporarily banned by the world association . Lee protested his innocence. His doctors injected him with dexamethasone without informing him that the substance was not allowed in competitions. Lee went on to say that this was the first positive test in a total of 124 doping tests in the 15 years of his career. In addition, the substance is not performance-enhancing. Ultimately, the positive test was attributed to contaminated Cordyceps capsules, which he has been consuming every day since he was a teenager. In April 2015, the world association banned him retrospectively for eight months. His silver medal from the 2014 World Championships in Copenhagen was revoked.

Speed record

Lee holds the current record for the fastest smash in an official match at 417 km / h in 2017 in Japan.

However, Tan Boon Heong received an entry in the Guinness Book of Records for his smash speed world record, which was improved in August 2013, under laboratory conditions as part of a racket test.

Private

He has been married to his former teammate Mew Choo Wong since November 9, 2012 . Their first son was born in August 2013, and Wong gave birth to their second son on July 9, 2015.
