chronology
The badminton players of Thailand around co-favorite Boonsak Ponsana caused initial excitement in the run-up : Since the Universiade , which, unlike the World Cup, was taking place at the same time in their country with prize money , they canceled a start at the World Cup at short notice. Probably the right decision for Ponsana: He won the men's singles title.
On the 3rd day of the title fights, Taufik Hidayat, one of the top favorites from the individual tournament, said goodbye . He was defeated by the unsettled Indian Anup Sridhar 14:21, 26:24 and 20:22. The seeded Malayans Tan Bin Shen and Ong Soon Hock got it even earlier in the men's doubles. They lost to Tadashi Ohtsuka and Keita Matsuda from Japan in round 1. The German starting field was also severely decimated. With Xu Huaiwen there was only one German left in the quarter-finals . There she was defeated by Lu Lan from China in three sentences. In the doubles, Nicole Grether and Juliane Schenk were the last remaining Germans to be eliminated in the second round.
Only Choong Tan Fook and Lee Wan Wah used the home advantage in men's doubles. They reached the semi-finals and became the only medal winners for the host country Malaysia . Only Gail Emms and Donna Kellogg held up the European flag in the last quarter-final match . But even for them the semi-finals were out of reach, so that the medals in all 5 disciplines went entirely to Asia.
