Taufik Hidayat (born August 10, 1981 in Bandung , Jawa Barat , Indonesia ) is a former Indonesian badminton player , Olympic champion and world champion . He is considered one of the most successful and best badminton players and is one of the most popular athletes in Indonesia. Above all, his skills on the backhand side and his backhand smash are legendary.

Career

Hidayat started badminton at the age of seven. Between 1999 and 2006 he won his biggest title in men's singles. During this time he won the Indonesia Open six times . At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney he reached the quarter-finals, at the 2001 World Championships in Seville, the semi-finals. His greatest success, however, was winning the gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , for which he received the record premium of 1 million dollars. In 2005 he was the first player to win the title at the World Championships in Anaheim at the same time as world champion and Olympic champion . In 2002 and 2006 he won the Asian Games , in 2000 , 2004 and 2007 he was Asian Champion . He won bronze at the 2009 World Championships in Hyderabad and was runner-up in Paris in 2010 . In 1999 and 2000 he reached the final of the All England at the age of 17 and 18, but was the only one of the big tournaments to never win. At the Indonesia Open 2013 he played his last official game, which he announced during the Japan Open 2012 .
