Tournament mode
This was the first time that groups were played at these Olympic Games. There were 16 groups in the singles and four groups of four in the doubles. The group winners in the individual and first and second in the double disciplines qualified for the knockout phase. Due to the regulations for the drawing of the groups, the eight top seeded players in the men's singles competed in groups of two, in the women's singles only the two top seeded players. All other groups in the individual disciplines consisted of three athletes.
The new group mode made it possible to manipulate games. Four doubles pairing for the women who had already qualified for the next round tried to lose their last group game and intentionally shot the ball out of the way or into the net: Wang Xiaoli / Yu Yang (China), Jung Kyung-eun / Kim Ha-na , Ha Jung-eun / Kim Min-jung (all South Korea) and Greysia Polii / Meiliana Jauhari (Indonesia). All eight players were excluded from the Olympic Games by the World Badminton Federation.
