At the 2012 Summer Olympics in the British capital, London , four archery competitions were held at Lord's Cricket Ground from July 27th to August 3rd .

For women and men there was an individual competition and a team competition. The competition program was identical to that of Beijing 2008 . The competitions were held with the recurve bow , shooting was done from a distance of 70 meters on supports with a diameter of 122 centimeters.

The only German participant in the Olympic archery tournament was Camilo Mayr . In the preliminary fight he was 52nd of the 64 participants with 653 rings. In the first round he failed 6-0 to Xu Ying . Alex Muller took part in the tournament for Switzerland and came in 62nd place with 633 rings. In the first round he lost 6-0 to the eventual winner Oh Jin-hyek . Austrian participants were not qualified.

During the pre-placement round held on July 27, the South Korean Im Dong-hyun set a new world record. With 72 arrows he scored 699 rings and exceeded his own record by three rings.

During the pre-placement round on July 27th, the South Korean team also set a new world record. In Dong-hyun , Kim Bub-min and Oh Jin-hyek together scored 2,078 rings, 18 more than their previous record. In the semifinals, South Korea lost to the USA 219-224, while Italy beat Mexico 217-215. Italy won against the USA (218: 219) by the last 10-ring arrow. South Korea won the bronze medal with 224: 219.

The only German participant in the Olympic archery tournament was Elena Richter . In the preliminary fight she reached the 30th place with 653 rings. In the first round she defeated Maja Jager 6: 5 and then lost to Tan Ya-ting 2: 6 in round two . Nathalie Dielen took part in the tournament for Switzerland and came 628 in the preliminary fight with 528 rings. With a 4-6 defeat against Tan Ya-ting, however, she was eliminated in the first round. One participant from Switzerland was not qualified.

South Korea's women won 2012 for the seventh time in a row. In other words, since the first edition in 1988 in Seoul , victory in this competition has always gone to South Korea. China's women won silver for the third time in a row (final: 210: 209) and Japan (209: 207 against Russia) for the first time a medal in Olympic archery.

qualification

Qualification criteria

128 athletes take part in the competitions, 64 each for women and men. These included six guaranteed quota places for the host NOK and five starting places that the Fédération Internationale de Tir à l'Arc (FITA) invited to NOKs who were unable to achieve any quota places after the qualification phase. A maximum of three male and female athletes can participate per NOK. Only athletes who have achieved a minimum qualification score (MQS) in an official competition during the qualification period are allowed to participate.

The following qualification criteria applied to both women and men. The qualification phase began with the 2011 World Cup from July 2 to 10, 2011 in Turin . The first eight teams of the World Championships won a quota place for the team competition and three quota places for the individual competition, the first eight athletes in the individual who could not achieve a quota place via the team also received a quota place. At the end of 2011 and 2012, continental qualifications followed, in which only NOKs who had not been able to achieve a quota place were allowed to participate. Africa and Oceania had two, America , Europe and Asia three quota places per gender. Finally, in June 2012 , an international qualification tournament took place in Ogden , where quota places were awarded for the individual and team competitions. Here again three teams and at least four athletes qualified individually.

At the Asian Championships, Indonesia, Malaysia and Mongolia won a quota place for women and Iran, Thailand and Hong Kong for men. At the open New Zealand championships, Australia and Samoa for women and Australia and Fijis for men were able to secure a starting place. At the African Championships, Egypt and South Africa fought for women and Egypt and Ivory Coast for men. At the Pan American Championships Mexico, Canada and Colombia won a quota for women and Cuba, Brazil and Colombia for men. The last continental qualification opportunity took place within the framework of the European Championship. Spain, Sweden and Germany secured a starting place for the individual Olympic competition for women and the Netherlands, Israel and Moldova for men.

Five quota places, which FITA was able to allocate by invitation, were awarded in April 2012 to Bhutan and Iraq for women and Bangladesh, Myanmar and San Marino for men.

The women's teams from India, Japan and the Republic of China and the men's teams from the USA, Mexico and Japan secured participation in the final qualifying tournament. In the individual, one athlete each from Estonia, Greece, Iran, Kazakhstan, the Philippines, Switzerland, Turkey and Venezuela qualified for the women and one athlete each from Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Poland, the Philippines, Slovenia and Switzerland and Venezuela.

After completing the qualification, Israel returned its starting place to the world federation. This was then reassigned to Germany.
