At the XXX. At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London , ten fencing competitions were held. The venue was the ExCeL Exhibition Center in the London Borough of Newham . For the first time ever, there were more women than men at the start.
There were six individual competitions (rapier, foil and saber for women and men) and four team competitions (rapier and foil for women, foil and saber for men). Despite a request from the International Fencing Federation FIE, the International Olympic Committee stuck to the previous practice of not holding two team competitions on the basis of a rotation principle. Compared to Beijing 2008, the team competitions in the women's saber and men's épée were replaced by ladies' and men’s épée.

The Austrian referee Barbara Csar led the semi-final between Britta Heidemann and Shin A-lam. When the score was 5: 5, fractions of a second before the end of the fight, the automatic timing was canceled. For technical reasons, the clock was then reset to a full second of remaining fighting time in which Heidemann scored the winning goal. After a half-hour discussion by the referees due to the protest of the Korean team, Heidemann was confirmed as the winner.

Qualification criteria
36 athletes qualified in the disciplines in which team competitions are also held, and 30 athletes in the disciplines without a team competition. Eight places were guaranteed to the host. The total number of athletes is thus 212. The main criteria for qualification were the respective world rankings as of April 2, 2012.
Eight teams plus possibly the host's team qualified for the team competitions. The first four teams in the world rankings and the best team on each continent in places 5 to 16 ( Asia / Oceania is a continental association) were qualified . If no team on a continent ranks 5th to 16th, the first team in the world rankings that has not yet qualified qualified, regardless of the continent.
In the individual competitions, the 24 athletes who are used in the team, as well as the best seven athletes in the adjusted world rankings, two each from America , Asia / Oceania and Europe , one from Africa . Five places, two to Europe and one each to the other continental associations, were awarded through continental qualifying tournaments in which only athletes whose nation has not yet reached a starting place were allowed to compete. In the individual competitions, in which there is no team competition, the first twelve athletes of the adjusted world rankings qualified as well as the two best placed athletes from the continental associations. Ten places, four in Europe, three in Asia / Oceania, two in America and one in Africa, were awarded through continental qualifying tournaments. The maximum number of athletes in a country is three for competitions with and two for those without team competitions.
Overview of the continental qualifying tournaments:
- African qualification in Casablanca , April 19, 2012
- Asian / Oceanic Qualification in Wakayama , April 20-21, 2012
- American qualification in Santiago , April 20-22, 2012
- European qualification in Bratislava , April 21-22, 2012
