Alaaeldin Ahmad El-Sayyid Abouelkassem ( Arabic علاء الدين أبو القاسم, DMG ʿAlāʾ ad-Dīn Abū l-Qāsim ; Born November 25, 1990 in Sétif , Algeria ) is an Egyptian foil fencer .

Alaaeldin Abouelkassem grew up in Alexandria as the son of an Egyptian father and an Algerian mother . At the age of eight, he began fencing at the Al-Selah Al-Sakandry Club , a sports club in Alexandria that had been founded in 1892. Abouelkassem is left-handed .

Athletic career

In 2005 Abouelkassem became a member of the Egyptian national team; in the same year he won a bronze medal at the Mediterranean Games in Almería . In 2008 he won the Championnats d'Afrique in Casablanca , 2009 in Dakar and 2011 in Cairo .

At the 2011 World Fencing Championships in Catania , Abouelkassem finished fifth in foil after becoming Junior World Champion in Baku the year before . At the Pan-Arab Games in Doha in 2011 , he won two golds, in both the individual and team competition.

In 2012 Abouelkassem again won the Championnats d'Afrique in Casablanca. At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Abouelkassem won the silver medal in foil. In the second round he had defeated the four-time German world champion Peter Joppich and in the semifinals the South Korean Choi Byung-chul. In the final he lost to the Chinese Lei Sheng . Abouelkassem was the first Egyptian to win a medal for his country at these games, as well as the first African in Olympic history to win a medal in fencing.

In 2016 Alaaeldin Abouelkassem was nominated for the start at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , for the individual and for the team.

Honors

Alaaeldin Abouelkassem was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Fédération Internationale d'Escrime .
