biography

Peter Joppich is a sports soldier in the Bundeswehr . He gained his first successes in fencing as a B-youth. From 1997 to 2001 he was a student at the fencing boarding school in Bonn. Since his junior years in 1999 he has always been among the world's best. Until 2007 he started for the Königsbacher SC Koblenz , since then for the Coblenzer Turngesellschaft 1880 . He trains at the Rhineland Olympic base in Bonn with his home and national coach Ulrich Schreck .

He was the first time individual world champion in men's floret in Havana in 2003 . In 2002 he succeeded in doing this with the team. In Lisbon he became world champion with the German national team. In 2006 he celebrated his second individual world title in Turin , and in 2007 his third in St. Petersburg . He won his fourth and, for the time being, last individual world championship title in Paris in 2010 . At the European Championships in Ghent in 2007 , he won the title with the men's floret team. In 2003 , 2004 , 2006 , 2007 , 2013 and 2015 he was German individual master in men's floret.

While he was eliminated in the individual at the Olympic Games 2012 in the round of 16 against the African champion Alaaeldin Abouelkassem , he was then able to show some nervous fights with the team in the men's floret. In both the quarter and the semifinals he was the last fencer to catch up with Germany in his three-minute battle. However, Germany lost in the semifinals against Japan in extra time 41:40 after a controversial referee decision. In the subsequent battle for bronze, the German team had little trouble with Joppich against the United States and clearly won.

At the European Championships in Zagreb in 2013 , Joppich was able to win the gold medal in the individual despite an ankle injury. In the final, he defeated the Russian defending champion Alexei Cheremissinov 15:11 and won his first continental individual title. He also won the gold medal in the team competition with Sebastian Bachmann , Marius Braun and Johann Gustinelli . In 2014 in Strasbourg , he won bronze in the individual and fifth place with the team.

He is also an active member of the national foil team.
