Fencing World Championships 1982
The 32nd World Fencing Championships took place between July 14th and 24th, 1982 in Rome . Eight competitions were held, six for men and two for women.
The competitions were overshadowed by a serious accident between the reigning foil world champion and Olympic champion Vladimir Smirnov and Matthias Behr . The tip of Behr's foil broke and penetrated Smirnov's brain through the mask and eye; Smirnow succumbed to his injuries after the World Cup ended on July 29th.
