The 2016 World Fencing Championships were held in Rio de Janeiro from April 25th to 27th . This was announced by the FIE at its 2014 annual meeting. The FIE viewed the World Cup as a test for the 2016 Olympic Games in the same location. There were only two team competitions that were not included in this year's Olympic program. Embedded in the event were two individual World Cup competitions in women's and men's epee.
