Áron Szilágyi (born January 14, 1990 in Budapest ) is a Hungarian saber fencer and two-time Olympic champion .

Life

Szilágyi started fencing at the age of ten. In 2009 he graduated from the Mihály Fazekas High School in Budapest. The 1.80 meter tall athlete then studies international relations at the Loránd Eötvös University (ELTE). He was initially trained by György Gerevich, after his death in 2008 by Béla Somlai. Szilágyi belongs to the Budapest sports club Vasas SC .

successes

In 2007 he became world champion with the saber team. He took part in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and finished seventh with a team and fifteenth in the individual. At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London , Szilágyi was Olympic champion in saber fencing, and he defeated the 2008 winner Zhong Man in the round of 16 at 15:10. In 2015 he became European champion . At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro , he managed to defend his Olympic victory in the final against the American Daryl Homer .
