Mihai Claudiu Covaliu (born November 5, 1977 in Brașov , Brașov County ) is a former Romanian fencer , Olympic and world champion, and current trainer .

Covalius' preferred weapon was the saber . At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta , he finished 25th in the individual competition and seventh with the Romanian saber team. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , he won the gold medal in the individual and was fourth with the team. Four years later Covaliu was at the 2004 Olympics in seventh in the 2008 Olympics , he won the bronze medal.

In 2001 he won bronze both at the European Championships in Koblenz in singles and at the World Championships in Nîmes with the team. At the European Championships in Moscow in 2002 , Covaliu again won bronze in singles. At the World Cup in Lisbon in 2002 he was third, in 2003 he finished second. Five years after his Olympic victory, Covaliu won his second major title at the 2005 World Championships in Leipzig. At the 2007 European Championships in Ghent and at the 2008 European Championships in Kiev, he won bronze in the individual.

He ended his active career in autumn 2008 and has been the coach of the Romanian national saber team ever since. Covaliu has been married to the former saber fencer Irina Drăghici since July 2001 and has a son (* 2005) and a daughter (* 2008). In 2016 he was elected President of the Romanian Olympic Committee .

Awards

In August 2008 Mihai Covaliu received the Order of Merit "Meritul sportiv" III from President Traian Băsescu . Class with two stripes.
