Kim Jung-hwan (born September 2, 1983 in Seoul ) is a South Korean saber fencer , Olympic champion and world champion.

successes

Kim Jung-hwan started fencing in 1996 and made his international debut in 2005 at the World Cup in Seoul. At this tournament he was immediately tested positive in a doping test and then banned for a year. Kim attributed the positive doping result to the use of sleeping pills.

The right-hander achieved countless successes both continentally and internationally. At the Asian Championships he won the title nine times, partly in an individual, but mostly with the team. In his first medal win in 2007 in Nantong , he secured bronze in the individual and silver with the team. Two years later in Doha he was the first Asian champion in singles, with the team he won bronze. In 2010 he became vice-Asian champion with the team in his native Seoul , and the following year he won his first title with the team in his own place. At the 2012 championships in Wakayama , he secured bronze in the individual and silver in the team competition, as he did in 2007. The following year followed in Shanghai silver in the singles and the next title win with the team. In Suwon , he defended his title with the team in 2014, but did not win an individual medal. Both in 2015 in Singapore and in 2016 in Wuxi , Kim was Asian champion in individual and with the team. In 2017 he repeated this success in the team competition in Hong Kong . The following year in Bangkok a silver medal in individual and bronze with the team followed.

In Asian Games , he won in 2010 in Guangzhou silver with the team. In 2014 in Incheon he won the gold medal in the team competition, in the individual he was defeated in the final 2014 he was defeated in the individual final Gu Bon-gil and thus won silver.

At the international level, Kim had already won bronze in singles and silver with the team at the Universiade in 2007 . At the fencing world championships he achieved his first successes with the team: in 2013 he won bronze with her in Budapest , and silver in Kazan the following year . Three years later he became world champion with her for the first time in Leipzig . In 2018 he not only defended the title with the team in Wuxi , but also became world champion in the individual.

At the Olympic Games in London in 2012 Kim won the gold medal with the team, in the individual he finished 19th after an opening defeat against Zhong Man . In his second Olympic participation four years later in Rio de Janeiro he was able to win a medal, this time in an individual. In the semifinals he was defeated by the later Olympic champion Áron Szilágyi with 12:15, before he defeated Mojtaba Abedini with 15: 8 in the battle for bronze . In 2016 he was also the world leader in the saber.
