Attila Keresztes (born January 18, 1928 in Budapest , † September 27, 2002 there ) was an American - Hungarian saber fencer .

Life

Attila Keresztes became world champion with the team in Rome in 1955 . At the Olympic Games in 1956 , he reached the finals unbeaten with the team in Melbourne , in which they remained undefeated and took first place. Together with Aladár Gerevich , Jenő Hámori , Dániel Magay , Rudolf Kárpáti and Pál Kovács , Keresztes became Olympic champion . After the games, he sat down with Jenő Hámori and Dániel Magay in the United States , where he was multiple national champion in individual and with the team. In 1964 he was part of the US squad at the Olympic Games in Tokyo , where he reached seventh place with the team. In the individual competition he was eliminated in the second round.

Keresztes was an engineer , but after drinking problems he began working as a taxi driver in the States. In the late 1990s he returned to Budapest, now in a wheelchair, after the Ministry of Sports offered him medical care, an apartment and a pension. He died in 2002 in his native Budapest.
