Giorgio "George" Leslie Santelli (born November 24, 1897 in Budapest , † October 8, 1985 in Teaneck ) was an Italian saber fencer and trainer.
Life
Giorgio Santelli took part in the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp in two disciplines. In the individual competition he reached the semi-finals, which he finished in sixth place in his group. In the team competition he remained undefeated with the Italian team and became Olympic champion together with Dino Urbani , Aldo Nadi , Nedo Nadi , Oreste Puliti , Francesco Gargano and Baldo Baldi . In 1922 he became Hungarian single champion with the saber and Austrian champion with the saber and foil. His father Italo Santelli was also a fencer.
Santelli attended business school in his native Budapest. In 1924 he emigrated to the United States , where he founded a fencing school and worked as a choreographer for fencing scenes on Broadway . From 1928 to 1952 he was the coach of the US Olympic team. He also started a company that sold fencing equipment. In 1963 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the US Fencing Association.
He was married to Baroness Gizella Buskas until their divorce in 1932. Santelli later remarried in the States. He had a daughter with Buskas and a daughter and a son with his second wife.
