history

The United States Fencing Association was founded in 1891 by New York fencers as the Amateur Fencers League of America . In 1900 American fencers took part in the Olympic Games for the first time. The association joined the Fédération Internationale d'Escrime, founded in the same year, as early as 1913 . In 1958 the USFA organized a fencing world championship in Philadelphia for the first time , another followed in 1989 in Denver . In 1981 the current name was adopted, in 1982 a national training center opened in Colorado Springs .

The fencers represented by the USFA won a total of 21 medals at the Olympic Games (2 gold, 7 silver, 12 bronze). Both gold medals and four other medals come from the women's saber, which has only been an Olympic discipline since 2004 .

organization

There are currently around 35,000 registered members (as of 2013). The USFA is managed by a Board of Directors and has a national office in Colorado Springs. A special feature of the USFA is that tournaments and fencers are classified according to performance (fencers from performance class E to performance class A, tournaments from E1 to A4).
