Colorado Springs , with around 465,000 inhabitants (2016 estimate, US Census Bureau ), is the second largest city in the US state of Colorado and is located around 100 km south of Denver on the eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains at the foot of Pikes Peak . It is the administrative headquarters of El Paso County and is home to various military facilities of the US Air Force , which, along with companies in the high-tech industry, is the most important employer in the vicinity of the city.
Colorado Springs is also known as the center of the evangelical movement. This is home to Megachurch , where Ted Haggard was pastor when he was chairman of the National Association of Evangelicals . The campaign for the referendum on Amendment 2, which changed the Colorado Constitution to prohibit local authorities from adopting anti-discrimination measures, also came from Colorado Springs. Occasionally - mainly by Evangelicals themselves - the city is referred to as the "Evangelical Vatican ".
The television series' Dr. Quinn - A Passionate Doctor 'is set in the early days of Colorado Springs around 1880 shortly after it was founded.
