When he was 11, Hamilton started playing the guitar. However, he later only found a band looking for a bass player, so he took over the bass. The band was called Sam Citrus and the Merciless Tangerine and played cover songs for the Beatles and the Rolling Stones , Tom was 14 at the time.

The bands Pipedream , Plastic Glass and The Jam Band followed . Here he already played together with future Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry . In 1969 Joe Perry and Steven Tyler's paths crossed , The Jam Band broke up and the formation of a new band was imminent: Aerosmith . Since then, Hamilton has been part of the band without interruption.

Hamilton co-wrote the Aerosmith classic Sweet Emotion from the 1975 album Toys in the Attic . This song is particularly characteristic of Hamilton's bassline . He was again co-songwriter for the hit singles Janie's Got a Gun (from the 1989 album Pump ) and Jaded (from the 2001 album Just Push Play ).

At the beginning of September 2006 it was announced that Hamilton had cancer of the larynx and had to undergo chemotherapy.
