Aerosmith is an American rock - band , which was founded in the 1970th To date, the band has sold over 150 million records worldwide, making them one of the most successful rock bands in the USA in the long term.
In the US, with over 66.5 million albums sold, they are ranked 14th among the bands with the most album sales.
history
Aerosmith emerged from the two bands Chain Reaction (Steven Tyler) and Jam Band (Joe Perry and Tom Hamilton). Shortly after the founding in Sunapee ( New Hampshire ) met Brad Whitford and Joey Kramer the band, Tyler replaced on drums. The band name comes from Kramer and, according to him, has nothing to do with Arrowsmith , a novel by Sinclair Lewis . Rather, the term originated when he and his then-girlfriend's album Aerial Ballet of Harry Nilsson stopped and searched by name for his band. This band did not use the name after all, so that he could later use it for the group with Steven Tyler. A suggestion from Steven Tyler was Hookers , an American word for whore ("cause playing the clubs is prostitution anyway.") They also decided against the name Spike Jones , because the albums of the musician of the same name , the band with this choice wanted to honor, were still available in stores.
Initially influenced by the blues , the band secured a record deal with Columbia Records after appearing in clubs . Her first album Aerosmith , on which the first single , Dream On , was included, was released in 1973 and reached number 166 on the Billboard charts. A major success came with their third LP Toys in the Attic in 1975, which includes songs like Sweet Emotion , Big Ten Inch Record and Walk This Way . With Toys in the Attic , Aerosmith had finally found their typical style, even if the blues and rock 'n' roll influences remained.
Aerosmith kept climbing to the top of the international charts. But with the success came the drugs. So Tyler and Perry were nicknamed "The Toxic Twins". In 1977, Draw the Line was followed by another album, which was able to build on the quality of its predecessors, but when the disputes in the band increased in the late 1970s, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford left Aerosmith and started their own projects ( The Joe Perry Project and Whitford-St.Holmes ); they were replaced by Jimmy Crespo and Rick Dufay. In this new formation, the two albums A Night in the Ruts (1979) and Rock in a Hard Place (1982) were recorded, which, however, could not match the quality and success of earlier days. The great days of Aerosmith seemed to be over. Only when Perry and Whitford came back to the band and Steven Tyler was admitted to a drug clinic, they found their way back on the road to success. Aerosmith showed Done with Mirrors under the new Geffen label in 1985 in a significantly increased mood, but was still not a great success. In 1986 Run-DMC covered the hit Walk This Way with Aerosmith. They also got support from producer Bruce Fairbairn and songwriter Desmond Child . Through Walk This Way they came back to the public and had big plans for the following year 1987. Shortly thereafter, the single Dude (Looks Like a Lady) was released . The album Permanent Vacation , released on it, was a huge success worldwide. More singles appeared in 1987 and 1988, until the band settled back in the studio. The follow-up album Pump was released in 1989 and brought the band with songs like Love in an Elevator and Janie's Got a Gun also top chart positions and sales in the double-digit million range. Get a Grip (1993), Nine Lives (1997) - again on the old Columbia label - and Just Push Play (2001) continued the story of the American hard rock flagship. However, sales fell from album to album. With I Don't Want to Miss a Thing , the soundtrack to the film Armageddon - The Last Judgment , they were the only band from the album to enter the US Billboard charts at number one in 1998. Aerosmith were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001 and received the MTV Icon Award in 2002 , where they were honored by countless musicians for whom they are role models. In 2004 Aerosmith released the album Honkin 'on Bobo , which brought the band back to their musical roots. Except for a new title, this only contained cover versions of already known songs.
On November 6, 2009, the Las Vegas Sun newspaper reported on its website that Steven Tyler had left Aerosmith, according to guitarist Joe Perry. A day later, Steven Tyler announced at a spontaneous performance by his bandmate Joe Perry in New York that he would not leave Aerosmith.
On November 2nd, 2012 the album Music from Another Dimension was released! , The single Legendary Child was pre-released on iTunes . On the subsequent Global Warming Tour, Aerosmith supported the marine conservation organization Sea Shepherd . Joe Perry and Steve Tyler visited the Sea Shepherd fleet in Melbourne, Australia . Afterwards, they invited the entire team, as VIPs, to the following concert in the Rod Laver Arena . Steve Tyler said that visiting the fleet was one of the most fantastic experiences of his life and asked fans to remember the Sea Shepherd name. The Global Warming Tour was accompanied by Sea Shepherd information booths.
style
Aerosmith play a special mix of rhythm and blues and hard rock with a certain swing. Distinctive symbols of Aerosmith are the voice of Steven Tyler and the guitar playing of Joe Perry, which impresses more through melody and creativity than through speed. The band's blues roots are reflected in harmonica solos by Steven Tyler (here especially on the songs Milk Cow Blues and Big Ten Inch Record , but also on their album Honkin 'on Bobo ). While hard rock used to be at the forefront of the repertoire, today the focus is more on ballads, with which the band had a number of chart successes since the 1990s.
The Rolling Stone listed Aerosmith ranked 59 of the 100 greatest players of all time .
