Run-DMC (also Run DMC ) was an American hip-hop band.
Band history
Band members Jason Mizell ( Jam Master Jay ), Joseph Simmons (Run) and Darryl McDaniels (DMC) grew up together in Hollis , Queens , New York City , where they formed the hip-hop / rap band Run in 1982 after graduating from high school -DMC founded. Through Russell Simmons (the older brother of Joseph Simmons and co-founder of the US record label Def Jam ) they received their first record deal a year later. Their first single, It's Like That / Sucker MC’s , came out in 1983 .
Along with Grandmaster Flash , Kurtis Blow , Boogie Down Productions and Public Enemy, Run-DMC are among the pioneers of hip-hop . In 1984 they were the first hip-hop group to receive a gold record for their album Run-DMC. For the next two years they also received platinum for their second album, King of Rock (1985) and double platinum for their album Raising Hell (1986). Her video for the piece Rockbox was the first rap video to be broadcast on MTV . They were also the first rap group to make it to the cover of the American music magazine Rolling Stone .
For the title Walk This Way from the album Raising Hell, they were the first hip hoppers to receive a Grammy nomination. Walk This Way was one of the first crossover songs - Run-DMC recorded it together with Aerosmith , who had a chart success in 1976 with their almost identical original version penned by Tyler / Perry. In the films Krush Groove (1985) and Tougher Than Leather (1988), which appeared in Germany under the title Mad Dogs , Run-DMC was one of the first rap groups to act as actors. In 1993 another piece by Run-DMC was released together with a rock band. This time they recorded Me, Myself & My Microphone with the funk metal band Living Color for the soundtrack of Judgment Night - Condemned to be killed , the concept of which took up their idea of a rock song with rap interludes. In the same year they had a recording on the CD The Beavis and Butt-Head Experience . The introductory story to the song tells the visit of the two protagonists in their changing room. Run-DMC were the first rappers to leave their handprints on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
On October 30, 2002, Jam Master Jay was shot dead by a stranger in a Queens music studio. That was also the end of Run-DMC's alleged killers Jason Mizell wasn't caught until 2020.
In 2009 the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for Best Performer.
The Rolling Stone listed the band 48th of the 100 greatest musicians of all time .
In 2020 Run-DMC celebrated their song "Walk This Way" together with Aerosmith at the Staples Center in Los Angeles - around 34 years after the original cooperation.
Solo careers
Joseph "Reverend Run" Simmons recorded the solo album Distortion . The first single from this album, Mind on the Road , can also be heard in the computer game Madden NFL 2006 by EA Sports . The album was released in November 2005. To release this album, his brother Russell Simmons founded the Russell Simmons Music Group label . The label runs as a sub-label of Def Jam. He has his own reality TV show called Run's House , which is broadcast by MTV . The series shows the life of the Simmons family.
The solo album by Darryl "DMC" McDaniels with the title Checks, Thugs, and Rock 'N' Roll was released on March 14, 2006. Among other things, he has together with 50 Cent when it was not yet known to a large public Studio worked on his own songs.
