Jam Master Jay (* 21st January 1965 in Brooklyn , New York City as Jason William Mizell , † the thirtieth October 2002 in Queens , New York City) was an American DJ and founder of the hip-hop group Run-DMC

Career

Mizell was born in the Brooklyn borough of New York. He moved to Queens with his family when he was ten . The later Run-DMC-DJ played bass and drums in different groups . In 1983 Jay, DJ Run and DMC founded the group Run-DMC. In the same year the band signed a contract with the Profile Records label .

Jam Master Jay later founded the Scratch DJ Academy in Manhattan. Children could learn to DJ there. In 1989 Jay started the label Jam Master Jay Records , which was successful through the hip-hop group Onyx .

Mizell died in an assassination attempt on October 30, 2002. At the time he was in a recording studio in the borough of Queens. Urieco Rincon, who was also in the studio, was shot in the leg. Mizell, who was shot in the head, left behind his wife Terri and three children. He was buried in Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale , New York. The case remained unsolved for nearly two decades until, finally, on August 17, 2020, two men were indicted by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York for the murder of Mizell. The accused are said to have committed the act as a result of a cocaine deal , in which the victim was involved and over which a dispute arose over the distribution.
