Queens [ kwiːnz ] is the largest area of the five boroughs ( boroughs ) of New York City . It is located in the west of Long Island and coincides with Queens County . In 2015, Queens had around 2.3 million residents.

history

Queens was founded on November 1, 1683 when the English colony of New York was divided into counties and incorporated into New York City in 1898. The new Nassau County was formed from the eastern part of Queens County in 1898 because the residents of the eastern part of Queens County had voted against the incorporation into New York City.

The name Queens (actually Queens County) is in honor of "Queen" Catherine of Braganza (1638–1705), the wife of King Charles II of England (1630–1685). The name for this newly settled land was given by the first British emigrants in 1683.

Four locations have National Historic Landmark status . A total of 97 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 20, 2018).

Population structure

Queens has a very large ethnic diversity, even by New York standards. The residents of the district come from 100 nations and speak 168 languages. 47.8% of the people living there in 2014 were born outside of the United States; 26.2% of the population were non-Hispanic whites, 28.0% were Hispanics , mainly from the Dominican Republic , Colombia , Ecuador , Peru , Mexico and Puerto Rico , 25.8% Asians, mainly from China , India , Bangladesh and the Philippines and 20.8% black .
