Tompkins County is a county in the state of New York in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had an official estimate of 96,501 people and a population density of 82 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Ithaca . Ithaca is home to Cornell University .

history
The county is named after Daniel D. Tompkins , a former New York governor and vice president of the United States. It was founded on April 7, 1817.
One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , Morrill Hall on the Cornell University campus . 58 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 21, 2018).
