Tioga County is a county in the state of New York in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 51,784 residents and a population density of 39 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Owego .
history
The county was named after the Mohawk's name for "at the fork". It refers to the confluence of the Chemung and Susquehanna Rivers , where the Indian gathering place was. Tioga County was established on February 16, 1791.
