Columbia County is a county in the state of New York in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 63,094 residents and a population density of 38 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Hudson .
It is named after Christopher Columbus .
geography
The county covers an area of 1,679 square kilometers, of which 32 square kilometers are water. Columbia County is bordered by Rensselaer County to the north, Massachusetts to the east, Dutchess County to the south, and Greene County to the west .
history
There is a National Historic Site in the county , the Martin Van Buren National Historic Site . Eight locations have the status of a National Historic Landmark . A total of 126 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 17, 2018).
