Claverack is a city in Columbia County , New York in the United States . At the 2000 census, Claverack had 6401 residents. The name of the city is a corruption of the Dutch words for clover fields .
The Town of Claverack is centrally located in the county, east of the City of Hudson .
history
Claverack was formed in 1778 from the former District of Claverack . The town lost part of its territory to the newly formed Town of Hillsdale in 1782 . The area became smaller again when the City of Hudson was incorporated in 1785 .

The Taconic State Parkway runs through the Claveracks area.

- Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton served as legal practitioners at the local courthouse .
- Martin Van Buren was admitted to the bar here.
- Margaret Sanger attended Claverack College , which closed in 1902, for two years .
Demographics
At the time of the United States Census 2000, Claverack lived in 6401 people. The population density was 51.9 people per km ². There were 2839 housing units at an average of 23.0 per km ². The Claveracks population was 93.95% White , 3.31% Black or African American , 0.20% Native American , 0.36% Asian , 0.06% Pacific Islander , 0.78% said other races belong to and 1.33% named two or more races. 2.47% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The residents of Claverack were distributed to 2,485 households out of which 29.6% were living in children under 18 years of age. 53.4% of households were married, 9.1% had a female head of household without a husband, and 32.8% were not families. 26.4% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 13.3% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.96.
The population was divided into 24.4% minors, 6.5% 18–24 year olds, 25.3% 25–44 year olds, 24.6% 45–64 year olds and 19.1% aged 65 years or more. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 women there were 100.8 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 94.7 men.
