Hudson is a city in the US state of New York and is the county seat for Columbia County . In 2010 Hudson had 6,713 residents. The name of the city is derived from the Hudson River , on whose eastern bank it lies, and thus goes back to the explorer Henry Hudson .
In the 19th century , the city experienced a boom from whaling . Today Hudson is known for the numerous antique shops on Warren Street. From Olana , the estate of the American landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church built in the style of a Persian castle , one has a wide view of the Hudson Valley . Hudson is home to a fire department museum, one of the largest fire fighting museums in the world.
geography
According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has an area of 6.0 km² ; of this, 5.6 km² is land and 0.4 km² (= 6.47%) is water.
Across the river is the Town of Athens and Greene County ; In the 19th century, the two banks of the river were connected here by a ferry . In between are the Middle Ground Flats, a former sandbank that has grown through both natural flushing and the deposition of dredged material.
history
Hudson is the county seat of Columbia County. Dutch settlers bought the land on which the city is located in 1662 from the Mahicans who lived here at the time . The area once belonged to the Town of Claverack ; the original name of the settlement was therefore Claverack Landing . Hudson, inhabited by whalers from New England and merchants from Nantucket , Martha's Vineyard and Providence , Rhode Island , was chartered as a City in 1785. Hudson was a busy port and defeated in the vote on the capital of the state by the New York Parliament by one vote.
The city grew rapidly and was ranked 24th for the population of cities in the United States in the 1790 census . In 1820 Hudson was the fourth largest city in New York.
National Register of Historic Places
Olana, the home of landscape painter Frederic Church, was founded in 1965 as Olana State Historic Site for National Historic Landmark explained. In addition, hundreds of Hudson's structures are or may be listed on the National Register of Historic Places , many of them located within two listed heritage zones, the Rossman-Prospect Avenue Historic District and the larger Hudson Historic District . There are also a number of buildings individually recognized as monuments. The buildings individually entered in the register include the Cornelius H. Evans House , built in 1861, and the US Post Office , built in 1911 .
