From the building you can enjoy a wide view over the valley of the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains . Church began construction after he suffered from arthritis and therefore had to end his artistic activity - as far as filigree work with canvas and brush was concerned.

Trivia

The American singer / songwriter Marc Cohn was so impressed by a magazine article about Frederic Church and Olana that he wrote the song "Olana" about it and published it on his 1997 CD " Burning The Daze ". In it he describes how the spirit of the artist moves in the rooms of the castle, his “last masterpiece” and looks back on his life. The turning from painting to architecture, forced by the illness, finally turns out to be an artistic challenge that brings him new fulfillment.
