Marc Cohn (born July 5, 1959 in Cleveland , Ohio ) is an American singer-songwriter living in New York .

Life

Cohn grew up in Cleveland, where his parents ran a pharmacy. Marc Cohn's mother died when he was two years old. His father married a second time, but died when Cohn was twelve years old. Much of his childhood flowed into his songs later (e.g. Silver Thunderbird is about his father and his car, Ghost Train and Mama's in the Moon about the loss of his mother, and Rest for the Weary about his parents' struggle for their existence ).

From 2002 to 2014 Marc Cohn was married to Elizabeth Vargas (* 1962), a journalist for ABC NEWS, in their second marriage. They have two sons (born in 2003 and 2006). Marc Cohn has two other children from his first marriage to Jennifer George.

Cohn made headlines outside of his music career when he survived a headshot on August 8, 2005. On his way home from a concert with Suzanne Vega in Denver , his tour van was stopped while leaving the parking garage by a criminal who needed a getaway car while fleeing from the police. In order to prevent a hijacking or even hostage-taking, the driver tried to evade the man, who fired several shots at the van. One shot pierced the windshield, grazed the driver, and eventually got stuck in Cohn's temple without penetrating the skull. Cohn suffered no serious injuries and only needed brief outpatient treatment.

Musical career

Fascinated by songwriters like Jackson Browne , Van Morrison , Joni Mitchell and above all Paul Simon , Cohn learned to play the guitar and piano and performed in small cafes and restaurants while still a student. He achieved his first respectable success by traveling as a keyboardist on Tracy Chapman's tour in 1989. Shortly afterwards he got his own record deal. He became internationally known in 1991 with the hit Walking in Memphis of his debut album Marc Cohn . In the same year he received the Grammy for Best New Artist . In addition, he was in Dortmund for Walking in Memphis the Lion of Radio Luxembourg awarded in bronze.

In 1993 he released the follow-up album The Rainy Season .

Private problems such as B. the separation from his first wife characterized the recordings of the rather dark album Burning the Daze (1998). Cohn then struggled with writer's block for a long time, so only one live album was released in 2005, Marc Cohn Live: Limited Edition EP , without new song material.

The aforementioned Denver attack and the shocking images of the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina finally cleared this blockade. After a nine-year hiatus, his fourth studio album, Join the Parade , was released in autumn 2007 , which deals with both experiences in several songs.

In 2010 he released the CD Listening Booth: 1970 with cover versions of songs from 1970 - the year that was decisive for his musical identity. On Listening Booth: 1970 u. a. Songs by Cat Stevens , John Lennon , Paul McCartney , Paul Simon , JJ Cale , Smokey Robinson , Jerry García , Van Morrison and John Fogerty reinterpreted by Cohn in his style.

In late 2014, Cohn released “The Coldest Corner in the World”, the theme song for the documentary “Tree Man”.

On March 25, 2016, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of his debut album, Careful What You Dream: Lost Songs and Rarities was released along with the bonus album Evolution of a Record. It contains 12 songs, all from the time before "Walking in Memphis".
