Lion from Radio Luxembourg
The Lion from Radio Luxemburg was a radio and television award that the broadcaster Radio Luxemburg and RTL-Radio awarded from 1959 to 1995 to artists from the field of hit and pop music . The prize was later awarded for other categories, such as politics (from 1990).
The price weighed 2.5 kg with the base and was 26 cm high. It was designed and cast in his studio in 1958 by the Luxembourg painter and sculptor Auguste Trémont .
The lion finally went up in the end of the 1990s together with the Telestar from ARD and ZDF in the German television award .
history
The presenter and pop singer Camillo Felgen was one of the inventors of the Lion Awards . The most successful stars of Radio Luxemburg's hit parade were to be awarded the lions. The decisive factors were sales figures and the hit parade appearances.
The first award ceremony took place on March 17, 1959 in Frankfurt am Main . At that time only three bronze lions were awarded. At the second award ceremony in the same year in the Grugahalle Essen , lions in gold, silver and bronze were awarded. From 1960 onwards the lions in gold, silver and bronze were awarded twice a year.
Up until the 1960s it was mainly German pop interpreters who received awards, then the trend towards English-language songs came. Initially, the prizes were only awarded to a few journalists. They were later awarded at a large entertainment gala. Since 1972 there has also been an honor lion.
Since the 1980s, the prices have only been available once a year. Later the Golden Lions were awarded in several categories, there were also club lions, public lions, political lions (from 1990) or other versions, such as the platinum lions.
