I want a cowboy for a man

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I want a cowboy as a man was the title of the most successful hit by pop singer Gitte Hænning from 1963, written by Rudi von der Dovenmühle (music) and Nils Nobach (text). The hit is now one of the evergreens .

History of origin

Gitte first appeared on stage in her Danish homeland in November 1954 at the age of eight. Her father Otto was a singing teacher and paved her way into show business when he recorded the German hit song Ich heirate Papi in Danish ("Giftes med farmand") with her (published on October 20, 1954). In Scandinavia she developed into a child star and sang a total of 16 records.

She was discovered for the German pop market at the age of 13 in 1960 by Nils Nobach, who produced the first German single with her for Electrola in February 1960 No School Tomorrow / Look at (# 21352).

Gitte - I want a cowboy for a man

Only the sixth single brought her the breakthrough and at the same time the greatest success. Friends of the successful Cologne authors Rudi von der Dovenmühle (music; under his pseudonym Rudi Lindt ) and Nils Nobach (text; as Peter Ström ) wrote the unusual hit title I want a cowboy as a man , produced by Heinz Gietz . Accompanied by hillbilly music (arranged by Erich Becht ), Gitte sang defiantly and authentically of age in the Electrola recording studio in Cologne on April 3, 1963, I want a cowboy as a man , a parody with admonishing voices from her parents, that of her daughter about men with solid professions advised to meet their daughter's absurd desire.

With this, Gitte first took first place at the third German Schlager Festival in Baden-Baden on June 15, 1963, where 12 titles made it into the final round and Gitte won. 10 broadcasters were represented in the jury, 200 selected viewers in the hall were allowed to vote; Added to this was the Infratest result , which had been kept secret until then .

Publication and Success

The victory paved the way for the single I want 'nen cowboy as a man / The old house on Huckleburry-Street (Electrola # 22 417) to hit the hit market. The single reached first rank after its release in August 1963 , where it remained for two months. By the end of 1963 500,000 copies had been sold, and by June 1965 a total of 1.05 million plates had been sold. It remained the pop singer's greatest solo success in Germany, who in November 2014 could look back on her 60th stage anniversary. The title reached third place in the Bravo annual charts in 1963 and was awarded the Silver Lion by Radio Luxembourg in the same year . In Gitte's home country Denmark, the song moved up to ninth place in the charts.

Motivated by the success, Rudi von der Dovenmühle and Nils Nobach wrote the title You get used to the beautiful for the Eurovision Song Contest 1964 on March 21, 1964 for Nora Nova , which, however, remained without points and came in 13th .
