The 9th Eurovision Grand Prix , the official title for that year, took place on March 21, 1964 in Tivoli , Copenhagen . The event was moderated by Lotte Wæver . Portugal took part in this competition for the first time, while Sweden paused because of an artist strike .

    Voting procedure

    A new voting procedure has been introduced. Each country was able to award a total of nine points, of which the first place within the jury received five points, the second three points and the third one point. If only one song was nominated, all nine points would be awarded. If there were two, the first would get six points and the second three points.

    • There are no recordings of the event. Only one radio recording exists. The recordings of the broadcast were burned in a fire on the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) .
    • BelgiumBelgium Belgium : An incident occurred when a man wanted to storm the stage before the presentation of the Belgian contribution to protest against the military regimes in Spain and in Portugal, which was participating for the first time , with the words "Down with Franco , down with Salazar " .
    • PortugalPortugal Portugal : Portugal did not receive any points the first time they participated.
