The Eurovision Song Contest 1973 was the 18th song competition of the European broadcasters Eurovision since it began in 1956. It took place on April 7, 1973 in Luxembourg , since that country had won with Vicky Leandros the year before and had the right to host the event perform. The official title this year was the 18th Concours Eurovision de la Chanson . The program was moderated by Helga Guitton, presenter in the German-language program of Radio Luxembourg . Anne-Marie David , who competed for Luxembourg, won the competition with the title: Tu te reconnaîtras .

With 129 out of 160 possible points (80.6%), the highest possible number of points in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest was achieved.

particularities

Artist of the winning title, Anne-Marie David , in 2008

The security measures were increased because of Israel's first participation and the attack on the Olympic Games in Munich the year before. The Israeli participant was under constant police protection, and photographers in the hall were asked to take two photos of the ceiling to prove that the cameras were real. The production manager also had the audience informed before the event to stay seated while applauding , since otherwise there would be a risk of being shot by the security in the hall due to the increased security level.

The event was also marked by a scandal surrounding the Spanish contribution. The song Eres tú was described as a plagiarism of the Yugoslav contribution in 1966 ( Brez besed sung by Berta Ambrož ). However, Eres tú was not disqualified.

The rule that each participating country must sing in the national language has been lifted. However, only Finland , Sweden and Norway made use of this new language freedom .

Attendees

  • participating countries
  • Countries that had participated in a previous ESC, but not in 1973
  • Israel took part in the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time this year. Since Malta and Austria did not take part, there was no new attendance record. There were 17 countries at the start.

    Voting procedure

The voting procedure was the same as in the previous two years. Each country sent two jurors to the competition, one over and the other under 25 years of age. The juries had to give each song points: at least one point, at most five points.
