Life

He was born into a wealthy family with aristocratic roots. At the age of 14 he published his first poems, and at the age of 16 his poems appeared in the anthology of the Almeida Garrett Literature Prize . In 1963 he published his first book, the collection of poems A Liturgia do Sangue (Eng .: The liturgy of the blood). In the following years he published a number of poetry. But he also performed with recitations of classic Portuguese writers, some of which are still available on record today, for example his interpretations of works by Bocage , Camões or the sermon of Santo António to the fish , Father António Vieira .

Opposed to the Salazar regime, he participated in the Comissões Democráticas Eleitorais in 1969 , from which the Movimento Democrático Português (MDP / CDE) party emerged. In 1969 he joined the illegal Portuguese Communist Party ( Partido Comunista Português , PCP) and became active in their literary circles. His increasing politicization was particularly evident in his numerous socially critical texts before and after the Carnation Revolution in 1974.

Sometimes under a pseudonym and sometimes under his real name, he wrote lyrics for numerous musicians, including Amália Rodrigues and Carlos do Carmo , and some with music by Alain Oulman . He also wrote texts for Portuguese contributions to the Grand Prix Eurovision de la Chanson , such as Desfolhada Portuguesa for Simone de Oliveira (1969), Menino do alto da serra for Tonicha (1971), Tourada for Fernando Tordo (1973), and Portugal no coração for the Os Amigos group (1977). Occasionally he also wrote song texts for international performers, such as Serge Reggiani and Chico Buarque . Especially after the Carnation Revolution, he also appeared as a copywriter for the revue theater .

His passionate and popular style of speaking, his sophisticated language of brilliant satirical puns, and his progressive social views, which he advocated (he was involved in the occupation of the Spanish embassy in Lisbon in 1975) made him popular with the general public and culturally interested intellectuals alike , whereby especially his song texts became known to the general public. He has often been referred to as the poet of the revolution .

Various streets and squares were named after him, such as a square in Lisbon's Alfama district, in whose Rua da Saudade he lived most of his life. Various artists also repeatedly dedicated works to him. The singer Fernando Tordo recorded the album O Menino Ary dos Santos in 1988, for example , with settings of early works. In 2009 the tribute album Canções de Ary dos Santos (German: songs by Ary dos Santos) of the Rua da Saudade (German: Street of the Saudade ) project was released, in which the Portuguese singers Viviane , Mafalda Arnauth , Susana Félix , and the Brazilian Luanda Cozetti reinterpreted songs by Ary dos Santos in a contemporary way. The compact and lively arranged album, influenced by pop music , fado and bossa nova / jazz , stayed in the Portuguese charts for over 24 weeks from the end of 2009 to mid-2010, reaching number 2.

In 2004 he was posthumously awarded the Order of Infante Dom Henrique with the rank of Grand Officer .
