Mafalda Arnauth (born October 4, 1974 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese fado singer.

Career

Until 2005

Mafalda Arnauth studied veterinary medicine in Lisbon and sang fado in her spare time. Little by little, their appearances in fado bars and on other occasions increased. Her real career as a singer began in 1995 when the fadista João Braga invited her to one of his concerts at the Teatro São Luiz in Lisbon.

She recorded her debut album in 1999 for EMI / Valentim de Carvalho , produced by João Gil . She convinced both the audience (good sales figures) and the critics (award for the “best new voice” in 1999 from the music magazine BLITZ , nomination for the Globo de Ouro award as “best performer” in 2000 by the television station SIC ). Fado was just beginning to gain new attractiveness through a multitude of new performers and varieties, and Mafalda Arnauth was one of the new names that carried this beginning development further.

The follow-up album in 2001 was produced by Amélia Muge and others and released simultaneously in Portugal and the Netherlands . With a view to this album, Esta Voz Que Me Atravessa , Andreas Dorschel writes : "Capable of the gentlest voices, she [Mafalda Arnauth] balances it out with moments of roughness that reminds us of the legendary origins of Fado from the half- and underworld" .

After Esta Voz Que Me Atravessa , Mafalda Arnauth became the first Portuguese musician to be represented internationally by Virgin Records . In 2003 she wrote a fado for the film Os Imortais by director António-Pedro Vasconcelos , and also appeared briefly in one scene with it. Following the release of her third album in 2003, Mafalda Arnauth's concerts in Portugal and other European countries increased; she also performed in Turkey and Macau . Her appearances in London's Royal Albert Hall and in the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam) in front of 2,400 people made the most impression on her during this phase.

In 2005 she left EMI / Valentim de Carvalho, where a best of compilation was released.

From 2005

In her next album ( "Diário" , "Tagebuch") Mafalda Arnauth, according to her own account, brought her previous experience, but also influences from Amália , Bethânia , Aznavour , Piazzolla and others. Here she turned further away from the dark, mystical image of fado.

In 2006 she toured the Benelux countries to present the “Diário” that was released there . But she also appeared at the Ibero-American summit in Uruguay and Costa Rica , in Angola and a full Centro Cultural de Belém . In 2007 “Diário” was released in France and Spain , again accompanied by extensive concert tours, including through the Cité de la musique in Paris .

Under the name “Flor do Fado” (“Fado Flower”) she developed a concert program that brought her to Mexico and the local Teatro da Trindade for the first time . In 2008 she recorded a matching album.

She now took part in other, very differently oriented projects. She created the theme song for a telenovela (the remake of the first Portuguese telenovela "Vila Faia" ), accepted Kepa Junkera's invitation to a project of traditional Basque songs, and performed in the Barretto bar in São Paulo . She sang his Para Vivir with Pablo Milanés at a Spanish benefit concert and worked both live and in the studio with the Galician folk band Milladoiro .

In 2009 she published “Flor do fado” in Italy and France, where she presented it at Les Trois Baudets . In the same year, together with the singers Susana Félix , Viviane and Luanda Cozetti, she realized the tribute project for the late poet and Fado lyricist Ary dos Santos , "Rua da Saudade" , where songs are reinterpreted in a contemporary, pop music-based sound were.

In 2010 she gave a concert of classics and standards in the castle walls of the Castelo de São Jorge above the traditional quarters of Lisbon. At her subsequent concerts she sang at the HFA Festival in Zimbabwe and the Coliseu dos Recreios in Lisbon. She also prepared the new album with her selection of songs. “Fadas” (“ Feen ”) was published by Polygram / Universal in 2010 and dealt with the work of important women in fado, alongside a version of a Piazzollas piece with text by Eládia Blásquez .
