The Sociedade Independente de Comunicação (SIC), in German roughly "independent communication company", is a Portuguese private television company. SIC, the first and so far largest commercial broadcaster in Portugal, broadcasts five TV programs across the country via DVB-T .
The first SIC channel went on air under the same name on October 6, 1992, ending the monopoly of the Portuguese state television, RTP . SIC is part of the media company Impresa , headed by former Prime Minister Francisco Pinto Balsemão , which also includes other media such as the weekly Expresso .
The main terrestrial channel SIC is freely available to everyone nationwide . The other four SIC channels ( SIC Notícias , SIC Radical , SIC Mulher and SIC International ) can only be received via cable or satellite. The main program of the television station consists of Portuguese and Brazilian telenovelas , in addition there are three news programs per day and certain documentaries, etc. In addition, numerous American television programs and series such as CSI: Miami or similar. broadcast with Portuguese subtitles.
From 1995 to 2004 SIC was the market leader in the Portuguese television landscape, but since then the broadcaster Televisão Independente (TVI) has taken the lead.
