Alexander Bode

Alexander Bode (born December 20, 1860 in Trebnitz , † February 13, 1920 in Chemnitz ) was a German gardener and educator .

Life

After finishing school, Alexander Bode initially started a career as a gardener. After completing his apprenticeship in Halle (Saale) , he attended the Pomological Institute in Proskau and then worked in several nurseries in Germany and abroad. Because of his high quality horticultural knowledge, an orchid grower from near London sent him to East Asia to collect orchids . Bode stayed there for two years and discovered several new species of orchids. When he returned to the German Empire, he successfully passed the orchard gardener's exam at the gardening director in Potsdam . He then took over the management of a large private and commercial gardening company.

In 1899 Alexander Bode became a teacher for fruit growing and horticulture at the agricultural school in Altenburg . In 1909 he moved to Chemnitz as an agriculture teacher, where he worked as a senior agriculture teacher until his death. At the age of 40 he made up for the high school diploma, studied at the University of Leipzig , received his doctorate there in 1910 and passed the state examination.

Bode found a large field of activity in Saxony and the Ore Mountains . He had a considerable influence on the improvement of fruit growing and horticulture in the Erzgebirge towns and communities and thus created several new opportunities to earn a living. He promoted fruit growing in Saxony very successfully. He also gave numerous lectures on this topic, but also on growing vegetables, agriculture in general, allotment gardening, etc.
