Rádio e Televisão de Portugal SGPS, SA (RTP) is Portugal's public broadcaster . The company consists of the divisions Radiodifusão Portuguesa (RDP) for radio, Radiotelevisão Portuguesa (RTP) for television, and RTP Meios de Produção for television productions.

history

The radio broadcaster Emissora Nacional de Radiodifusão was founded on August 4, 1935. 20 years later, on December 15, 1955, the television station Radiotelevisão Portuguesa was founded , but only on paper. It was not until 1956 that the test broadcasts from the Feira Popular Studios in Lisbon began . Regular broadcasting began on March 7, 1957 and reached around 65 percent of the population of Portugal at that time. In the mid-1960s, the whole country could be supplied.

In the following years, more stations were created. A second program RTP2 ( called dois: or 2: since January 5, 2004 ) went on air on December 25, 1968 . Regional channels also started for Madeira (August 6, 1972) and the Azores (August 10, 1972).

Before the Carnation Revolution , RTP was directly subordinate to the dictatorial regime of the time. This was also reflected, for example, in the main topics of the news broadcast on July 20, 1969, the day of the first moon landing . As the world watched the event, the Portuguese news began with the opening of a concrete factory by President Américo Tomás .

In the summer of 2012, the Portuguese government announced that it would examine a partial privatization and a significant downsizing of RTP as part of large-scale austerity measures. Portugal wanted to save hundreds of millions of euros and reduce the budget deficit. As a result, the management of the company headed by Artistic Director Guilherme Costa resigned in protest. The government then appointed Alberto da Ponte, a manager from outside the industry, as the new RTP director. After the massive resistance, especially since it became known that Angolan investors were interested in RTP to join, as happened before at Controlinveste , today Global Media Group , Impresa and Cofina , the privatization plans have been postponed and there is now talk of a restructuring of the station.
