Américo Tomás
Américo de Deus Rodrigues Tomás [ ɐˈmɛɾiku dɨ dewʃ ʁuˈdɾiɣɨʃ tuˈmaʃ ] (also Thomaz ; born November 19, 1894 in Lisbon ; † September 18, 1987 in Cascais ) was Admiral of the Navy and Portuguese President of the Estado Novo (1958 to 1974).
Before his controversial election, which he won through massive election rigging against the opposition candidate, General Humberto Delgado , Tomás was Minister of the Navy in Salazar's cabinet . Overthrown by the Carnation Revolution , he went into exile in Brazil , but returned to Portugal in 1979. During his tenure, the colonies of Daman and Diu and Goa fell to India .
