Cascais is a city (vila) in Portugal . The city is located on a sandy bay in the Atlantic , about 25 kilometers west of Lisbon .
Cascais can be reached from Lisbon by motorway or rail. Both traffic lines end here. Cascais also has a marina with around 600 berths.
On September 29, 2013, the municipalities of Cascais and Estoril were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Cascais e Estoril . Cascais is the seat of this newly formed community.
history
The area of Cascais was already settled in prehistoric times, as excavations have shown. The necropolis of Alapraia consists of four rock-domed tombs, some of which are located under the houses at a fountain in the eponymous town east of Cascais. There are several villas from the Roman period in the first century. The Arab period left various place names in the area. The Arab poet Ibn Mukan, born in Alcabideche , was the first to mention windmills in Europe.
In 1153 the first Portuguese king, Alfonso I , recaptured the area. The town of Cascais was mentioned in a document in 1159 and was part of Sintra at that time .
Cascais received city rights on June 7, 1364 from King Peter I. The castle, which the king gave to Gomes Lourenço de Avelar, must have been built around this time.
King Johann II ordered the construction of a defense tower in 1488. During the Portuguese voyages of discovery, around 1537, Cascais got one of the country's first lighthouses . Today the Farol Guia lighthouse, which was built in 1810, stands here. It is an octagonal tower 27 meters high.
From 1870 onwards, the royal family regularly spent the summer in Cascais, which made the place attractive to the nobility and upper classes.
In 1888, the first official football match in Portugal took place in Cascais . On September 30, 1889, the Lisbon railway line was opened.
From the 1930s onwards, Cascais, together with Estoril on the opposite side of the bay , became the gathering point for the Portuguese upper class and many wealthy travelers from abroad.
Cascais County
Cascais is the administrative seat of a district of the same name ( Concelho de Cascais) and belongs to the Lisbon district . The neighboring districts are (starting clockwise from the north): Sintra and Oeiras . In the west and south, the Cascais district forms part of the Atlantic coast.
With the regional reform in September 2013 , several municipalities were merged into new municipalities, so that the number of municipalities decreased from six to four.
