Azambuja is a small town ( Vila ) in Portugal with 8190 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
history
Finds prove a prehistoric settlement at least since the Copper Age . The Romans called the place Oleastrum , which belonged to the province of Lusitania . After the invasion of Germanic tribes, Azambuja became part of the Visigoth Empire . With the conquest of the Moors in 711 , the place became Arabic and was called Azanbujâ (wild olive tree ).
During the Reconquista , Portugal's first king, D.Afonso Henriques , conquered the area. He gave the place, now called Vila Franca , in 1147 to D.Childe Rolim, son of the Earl of Chester , in recognition of the services rendered in the conquest of Lisbon in 1147 . King D.Sancho I gave Vila Franca first town rights in 1200 and handed the area over to D.Rolim de Moura, son of D.Childe Rolim, for further settlement. In 1218 King D.Afonso II confirmed the town charter of the place that was now known as Azambuja. In 1296 King D Dinis had the Pinhal de Azambuja (German: Azambuja pine forest) built near Azambuja , to which Almeida Garrett later referred more often in his Viagens da Minha Terra (German: about trips through the homeland). King Manuel I renewed Azambuia's city rights in 1513 .
Over the centuries that followed, Azambuja County gradually grew. In the course of the various administrative reforms after the Liberal Revolution in 1822 , the district was first expanded to include Aveiras de Cima and Aveiras de Baixo and should then be dissolved and Cartaxo incorporated . After resistance from the population, the independent district of Azambuja remained and received the communities of Vila Nova da Rainha , Manique do Intendente and Alcoentre , in the course of the dissolution of the previously independent district of Alcoentre. The circle has existed in its current composition since the end of the 19th century.
At the end of 1963, a Ford assembly plant opened here , which was integrated into the neighboring General Motors ( Opel ) plant in 2000 . Production of the Opel Combo was stopped there at the end of 2006, relocated to Saragossa (Spain) and the Azambuja plant closed.
Attractions
The Copper Age settlement of Vila Nova de São Pedro is located northwest of the A1 motorway near Cartaxo .
The architectural monuments of Azambuja also include various mansions and a large number of residential buildings from different eras, two gardens, the stone fountain Fonte Santo António , and a number of historical public and private buildings, including the bullring and the train station decorated with azulejos . Some sacred buildings should also be mentioned, such as the Mannerist - Baroque parish church Igreja Paroquial de Azambuja from the 16th century, which is also called Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção (English: Church of Our Lady of the Assumption) after its patron saint .
The historic town center is also protected as a whole.
