history

The church of Vale do Paraíso, the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Paraíso

According to tradition, the history of the place began around 1500 when a shepherd found a figure of Mother Mary in a tree here . People from the region came here regularly afterwards and a first small chapel was built around 1555. The place name arose in this context through religious exaggeration.

The church underwent a number of extensions and renovations, including a. after nobles from the capital Lisbon fled here from the plague in the 16th century. In particular, the founding of the local order of the Confraria de Nossa Senhora do Paraíso in 1562 in connection with the presence of the nobles ensured the permanent development of the village. After the earthquake in Lisbon in 1755 , the church was again extensively rebuilt. To this day, however, it only has the status of a chapel and belongs to the parish of Aveiras de Cima. It is now a listed building.

The independent municipality of Vale do Paraíso was created in 1916 by splitting off from the municipality of Aveiras de Cima .

Since no doctor has been practicing in the community for a number of years, the community administration has been having routine examinations carried out on site free of charge in cooperation with medical staff from the local fire brigade since autumn 2016. The offer is aimed at the older population in order to save them the trip to the district town.
