The District of Lisbon ( Portuguese Distrito de Lisboa ) is a district in Portugal that consists of the traditional province of Estremadura . The neighboring districts are Leiria in the north, Santarém in the east and Setúbal in the south. In the west the district borders on the Atlantic Ocean .
The area is 2761 km², the district has a population of 2.5 million (as of 2016). The capital of the district is Lisbon . License plates for trailers: L .

Until the restructuring in 2002 , the district was completely integrated into the Lisboa e Vale do Tejo region and divided into the two subregions Grande Lisboa and West (Portugal) , expanded to include Lezíria do Tejo .
After that, Lisboa e Vale do Tejo was significantly reduced in size and renamed the Região de Lisboa . While the sub-region Grande Lisboa remained in the Lisbon region , the sub-region West (Portugal) ( Oeste ) was assigned to the Região Centro and Lezíria do Tejo to the Região do Alentejo .
