Torres Vedras is a city ( Cidade ) and a district ( concelho ) in Portugal with 79,465 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). It is located in the Oeste sub-region and belongs to the historical province of Estremadura . The place is also known in Portugal for its wine production and also became part of the Rede de Judiarias , an association of Portuguese places with historically significant Jewish communities, who also operate a joint tourist marketing with it.
history
Various prehistoric finds prove that the area was inhabited for a long time by humans. Tamuja was the likely pre-Christian name of the place. According to various historians, the place was either called Turres Veteres by the Romans , which was adopted by the following Goths and Suebi , or the Visigoths called the place that to differentiate it from Torres Novas . After the conquest of the Iberian Peninsula by the Arabs in 711 , the place lost all meaning, so that today's district was only sparsely populated when Portugal's first king D.Afonso Henriques conquered it from the Moors in 1148 . After the subsequent settlement, the place received city rights ( Foral ) for the first time in 1250 by King D.Afonso III. At that time, Torres Vedras was already forming an independent administrative district.
In 1413 King D. João I met here with his council to discuss the venture of a first expedition to North Africa. The subsequent successful capture of Ceuta in 1415 marked the beginning of the Portuguese voyages of discovery . Since its expulsion from Spain in 1492, Torres Vedras has also hosted an important Jewish community. In 1510 King Manuel I renewed the town charter and elevated the place to a vila (small town with administrative rights).
With the lines of Torres Vedras , a fortification line was built from 1809 in connection with the Napoleonic Wars on the Iberian Peninsula , in order to serve as a barrier and retreat area in the event of a renewed invasion of Portugal by Napoleon's armies. The Linhas de Torres Vedras became a key reason for the failure of the French invasions. In 2012, this historic episode was filmed by the Chilean director Valeria Sarmiento under the title Lines of Wellington - Storm over Portugal (movie) or Linhas de Torres Vedras (TV multi-part). a. Mathieu Amalric , John Malkovich , Soraia Chaves and Nuno Lopes .
1979 Torres Vedras was elevated to a city (Cidade).
